Bioavailable

Most magnesium compounds have poor bioavailability. Magnesium oxide is the most popular source of magnesium in supplements because it has a high magnesium content. This makes it easy and affordable to formulate with, however it is not very bioavailable (due to its low solubility); it’s thought that only ~4% of the magnesium in magnesium oxide can be absorbed.

Magnesium Bisglycinate is absorbed in the proximal small intestine. Therefore, the absorption of Magnesium Bisglycinate is not affected by stomach pH and dietary factors. There are many dietary factors that can impair magnesium uptake, including:

• Phytates

• Oxylates

• Certain types of fibre

The glycine molecules prevent magnesium from reacting with dietary inhibitors and helps to decrease the pH level in the small intestine, which is it also thought to contribute to its increased bioavailability.

Gentle

Magnesium is often associated with laxative effect due to poor bioavailability. When magnesium salt is not readily absorbed, it draws water into the stools by osmosis. The strong attraction of water to magnesium ions can cause diarrhoea in response to poorly absorbed magnesium supplements. Magnesium Bisglycinate is much gentler and less likely to cause this side effect because the magnesium ion in the chelated state is neutral; it’s too many ions in the intestine that cause osmotic pressure, resulting in a flow of water into the intestinal lumen.

Soluble

Magnesium Bisglycinate is freely soluble in water, making it more bioavailable and easier to work with in liquid applications. The most common form of magnesium (magnesium oxide) is very poorly soluble.
