Xylitol 40 Mesh is a crystalline off-white powder processed from corn cobs (Gramineous zea). Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar alcohol found naturally in many fruits and vegetables. It is mainly used as a diabetic sweetener as it has a similar sweetness to that of sucrose but has 33% less calories. When xylitol replaces sugar in food, tooth demineralisation is decreased. In fact, a maintenance of tooth mineralisation can be claimed (as per the EU Register on nutrition and health claims) in foods where xylitol is used.

Unlike sucrose, xylitol is not a metabolised bacteria that causes cavities in teeth. As a result, it has been shown that chewing xylitol gum may prevent dental cavities, making Xylitol the sweetener of choice in the chewing gum industry.

Apart from its function as a sweetener, Xylitol also acts as a humectant, preventing food and mixtures from drying out by counteracting the effect of a dry atmosphere. The humectant properties of xylitol are put to good use in the cosmetic industries where it is added to creams, soaps etc. Xylitol is also vegan friendly.
