What is vegan collagen?
As we have discussed in our previous blog, collagen is a protein that is crucial for the health of our skin, bones and connective tissue. However, collagen comes from animal sources such as bovine hides and fish scales which can be problematic for those that are consuming a vegan or vegetarian diet.
Some companies are using precision fermentation to produce 100% vegan collagen that matches the biological structure of animal-sourced products. However, this process is currently largely considered to be an unapproved novel process for the EU and UK markets.
What we can create for EU and UK markets are products that closely mirror the amino acid profiles of these animal-sourced products. This is what we have done with Coll-egan®.
Coll-egan® also allows for access to the health claims "Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage" and "Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin". This product can be marketed as a "collagen formation product".
Amino acids can be difficult to flavour and that's why we've got access to some of the best flavourists in the country. Some of their best recent flavours that they have created with Coll-egan® are Dragonut (Dragon fruit and coconut) and Mango Aloe.
